FKE, the Government and COTU-Kenya have agreed to hold a high level conference on the future of work. This was one of the outcomes of the National Labour Board Retreat held in Naivasha to discuss among other issues Kenya’s challenges as far as job creation is concerned.

The meeting agreed that globalization, technology, demographics and the changing work environment will impact the future of work in Kenya, compounding the already existing unemployment challenge. Speaking at the Retreat, FKE CEO Jacqueline Mugo noted that the world of work has changed over the last century and has impacted people’s working choices and well-being at work. 

“The world of work has been marked by increased labour market participation by women and youth, growth of informal employment, a move from blue-collar jobs to service jobs, increase in self-employment and growth in sub-contracting and franchise among other trends,” Mrs. Mugo added.

The partners have set up a technical committee drawn from FKE, Ministry of EAC, Labour and Social Protection and COTU-Kenya to organize the conference whose dates shall be communicated. Among the key topics will be Work and Society; Governance of work; Decent Jobs for all and Organization of work and production.

Present at the meeting were the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and EAC Affairs, Principal Secretary for Labour Khadijah Kasachoon and COTU-Kenya Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
